Mental Health Peer Specialist

Rainbow Heights Club is seeking a Mental Health Peer Specialist to provide peer support services to individuals living with serious mental illness. Under the supervision of the Director of Peer Services, the Mental Health Peer Specialist will function as a role model to peers by modeling and teaching symptom management and coping skills. The Peer Specialist will use a human-centered approach to support individuals in developing their own recovery, well-being, and health goals. This position requires someone who has a mental health diagnosis and has come a long way in their recovery, and is ready to share that experience with other people.

Mental Health Peer Specialist Responsibilities:

  • Conduct screenings, intakes, and orientations for new members
  • Facilitate support, activity, and psycho-education groups
  • Provide 1:1 support interventions
  • Document detailed progress and group notes
  • Other tasks as assigned

 

Mental Health Peer Specialist Requirements:

  • We are currently accepting applications from individuals who have APS certification, as well as those who do not. We are able to mentor staff who wish to move forward toward APS training and certification.
  • There is an opportunity to assist with our meal program. Comfortability in the kitchen is a plus.
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • Be comfortable with, knowledgeable about, and sensitive to issues related to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Regardless of your sexual orientation or gender identity, you must be proud of and comfortable with it, and must be ready, willing, and able to discuss these topics with individuals
  • Prior experience working with adults living with major mental illness and substance use disorder, including significant prior experience providing 1:1 support and connection to care
  • Ability to form a therapeutic relationship with consumers from many different racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds, which are intended to nurture recovery and goal achievement
  • A professional attitude while maintain a flexible, reliable, patient, organized, trustworthy, supportive, and kind mindset
  • Ability to provide supportive services in a strategic, person centered and trauma informed manner
  • Ability to document progress notes

 

Location: 25 Elm Place, 6th floor, Brooklyn, NY 11201

 

Hours/ Duration: Exact hours are dependent on full time or part time hire, but will be between the hours of 10 AM and 6 PM Monday through Friday.

 

Compensation: $18 – $22.00 per hour

 

Benefits: Part-time employees are eligible for paid sick leave accrual, plus 12 paid holidays and 1 paid personal day annually. (Part time employees are paid for 4 hours for each of these days, beginning with their first day of employment.) If you join our staff and stay for a year, part time staff receive a $1500 bonus which is paid in 2 six month parts

 

Full-time employees are eligible for paid vacation, holidays and sick days, and a monthly unlimited NYC MetroCard.
