  1. Determine the emotional message communicated in the way speakers say the words they use.
  2. Describe how they can use their paraverbals (inflection, tone, pitch, and pace) to hold space and create safety when providing peer support.
  3. Describe how to use features provided in online environments to actively and empathically “listen.”
  4. Use the tools and features of online environments to provide safe, empathic, and effective peer support.

  1. Participants will learn at least three questions to ask someone who is contemplating suicide beyond “Do you have a plan?”
  2. Participants will be able to identify at least two other supports for someone contemplating suicide beyond an in-patient psychiatric unit or psychiatric drugs.
  3. Participants will learn the four parts of the V-C-V-C model of Validation, Curiosity, Vulnerability and Community.

Training opportunities for Peer Support Providers.

If you’re looking for peer support provider training, N.A.P.S. encourages you to contact recognized, respected, and proven training organizations. While N.A.P.S. does not endorse any one peer support provider training organization, we strongly urge peer supporters or those interested in becoming peer supporters to obtain training from a reputable organization. Many of the organizations listed below also offer advanced level, refresher, and continuing education for peer support providers.​

When seeking certification, check the requirements in your state first!

The resources below are a great place to start. You may wish to read the following National Overview from the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health before getting started.
